IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) will continue its popular “Faculty Friday” webinar series next month with a session on a hot topic: data analytics.
The webinar, which will be led by Kip Krumwiede, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, IMA director of research, will be titled “How in the World Do I Teach Data Analytics?” and held on February 23 at 1 p.m. EST. During the hour-long presentation, Krumwiede will discuss:
- The definition of data analytics and how data analytics can be used as a tool for creating competitive advantage;
- How to integrate data analytics with management accounting competencies;
- Examples of applications and models; and
- Ways to teach data analytics, including case and research studies.

Said Krumwiede, “Everyone these days seems to be talking about data analytics, but so far, textbooks and teaching cases have little content on this important emerging skill for management accountants. This webinar will provide academics with tools they can immediately use in their classroom teaching, helping them to impart knowledge that will be very useful as students seek to gain competitive advantage in the job market.”
IMA also offers archived versions of previous Faculty Friday webinars. Among recent titles, “Snapchat 101: Engaging Students in Accounting,” was held in late September 2016 and was led by Wendy Tietz, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, accounting professor at Kent State University. During her talk, Tietz provided an overview of the popular app Snapchat and demonstrated ways that Snapchat can be used for student engagement, including examples of instructor-student Snaps. Tietz also discussed how increased student engagement through this social media channel can lead to lower drop rates and higher course evaluations. In late October 2016, Kelly Richmond Pope, Ph.D., CPA, accounting professor at DePaul University, spoke on the topic of “Teaching Millennials With Reality TV.” Pope, a white-collar crime expert as well as a filmmaker, discussed how thinking of ways to excite students always poses a challenge for educators. During her talk, Pope explained how using business-related reality TV shows, such as CNBC’s “The Profit,” can be an excellent way to engage students while still conveying important managerial accounting concepts.
