Jeff Thomson, CMA, CSCA, CAE, president and CEO of IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting by Accounting Today. The list, published annually, includes some of the profession’s most prominent leaders; it’s the seventh time Thomson has earned this distinction over the past eight years.

In their comment on Thomson, the Accounting Today editors noted, “As [IMA] gets ready to celebrate its first hundred years in 2019, Thomson is working to get it ready for its next hundred, including creating a competency framework for management accountants that will prepare them for the future.”

Under Thomson’s leadership, IMA enjoyed an exceptional year for the fiscal period ended June 30, 2018. Membership reached 111,866, a year-over-year increase of 24% and the highest year-end total in IMA’s history. Further, ICMA® (Institute of Certified Management Accountants) certified 6,093 CMAs, a record number for any fiscal year and up 48% compared to last year. Further, more than 60,000 professionals have earned the CMA certification since the program’s inception in 1972. The number of new CMA candidates also increased significantly – up 52% compared to last year, reaching 39,516 – thanks to IMA’s successful integrated campaign and other initiatives.

Thomson has been president and CEO of IMA since 2008. Previously, he served as IMA’s vice president of research from 2005 to 2008 and, before that, as CFO of business sales at AT&T from 1979 to 2002. In the past, he has been recognized by Trust Across America as one of the “Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior” and by The Accountant/International Accounting Bulletin in its “Global Accountancy Power 50” list of leading influencers.
