Thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteer leaders in the region, IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) is gaining an increased presence in Europe. Jeff Thomson, CMA, CSCA, CAE, IMA president and CEO, recently spent five productive, busy days in Vienna, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Paris. He met with corporate and review course partners as well as attended chapter and special recognition events to help further solidify relationships in the region and extend IMA’s influence around the world.
“We continue to gain visibility and attract new partners in Europe, which has a rapidly growing economy and a workforce very receptive to certification. We look forward to continuing to share our message of becoming ‘future-proof’ with professionals and organizations in this region, thanks to the ground-game efforts of our Amsterdam and Zurich staff,” noted Thomson.
Highlights of the trip include:
Vienna and Zurich
Accompanied by Bernardin Generalao, IMA manager of business development, Thomson began his visit in Vienna at the offices of Österreichisches Controller Institut (OCI), a training company and association with which IMA has had a partnership since 2012. OCI is working in Austria to attract management accountants to the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) program, and this meeting helped the two groups identify additional partnership opportunities. The day concluded with Thomson delivering a keynote at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, where he inspired finance and accounting students and professionals to drive the “Future of the Accountant” into the digital age.
In Zurich, Generalao and Thomson held a luncheon training workshop with employees and potential CMAs at a leading international financial institution. The team also held an internal workshop at a prominent Swiss energy company, where Thomson provided an introduction to IMA and the CMA and delivered a presentation on “Strategic Planning and Budgeting: A CEO’s Perspective.”
Also in Zurich, the team participated in an IMA Switzerland Chapter event, attended by many members and special guests, including Pascal Peter, long-time IMA Global Board member and recipient of a Voluntary Service Award in recognition of his services to IMA on a global and regional level.
Paris and Amsterdam
On the next leg of the trip, Thomson was joined by Alain Mulder, IMA director of European operations. In Paris, Thomson and Mulder met with the senior program manager at Top Finance, a leader in financial training and professional certifications and with which IMA enjoys a long-term partnership.
Thomson and Mulder next attended an IMA French Chapter event at the IÉSEG School of Management, one of the top business schools in France. At that event, Thomson presented the school with a plaque honoring its entry into the IMA Higher Educational Endorsement Program. Thomson also discussed ways that IMA can support IÉSEG students, including offering CMA Scholarships.
On the last part of the trip, in Amsterdam, Thomson met with executives from Philips, winner of this year’s ICMA Bulloch Award. Thomson presented the award to senior executives at Philips and used this opportunity to recognize the many Philips employees who have earned their CMA over the past several years. Other highlights of the Amsterdam portion of the trip included meetings with review course partners Wiley and Markus Verbeek Praehap (MVP). MVP is a financial course provider with 125 years of experience and has just launched a CMA review course.
Finally, the trip concluded with an IMA Annual Corporate Recognition Event in Amsterdam, which included several presentations by academics and financial leaders. At the event, Thomson also recognized Royal KPN, a telecommunications and information technology communications technology company in the Netherlands, for implementing a new Balanced Scorecard-type management tool with relevant, future-oriented KPIs and several performance dashboards that guide daily operations.
