The National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) recently honored Irvin N. Gleim, CMA, CFM, CPA, CFII, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the Fisher School of Accounting, University of Florida, and president of Gleim Exam Review, with its 2018 National Achievement in Education award.
Each year, NABA’s national and regional awards are given to highlight achievements, excellence, and leadership. Gleim’s Achievement in Education award was presented along with 14 other national and regional awards at the NABA National Convention + Expo in Orlando in June.
In early 2017, IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) and NABA signed a Memorandum of Understanding, pledging mutual support of each other’s organizations. NABA is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to bridging the opportunity gap for African-American professionals in the accounting, finance, and related-business professions. Representing more than 200,000 African-American professionals in these fields, NABA advances people, careers, and its mission by providing education, resources, and meaningful career connections to both professional and student members.
In response to receiving the award, Gleim said, “I am honored to receive such a prestigious award from an organization that means so much to me. In the 70s and 80s, my professional career flourished, and I tried to give back by working with NABA and directly with faculty and students at historically black colleges and universities. In the process, I gained more than I gave, making lifelong colleagues who continue to enrich not only my professional career but the accounting profession as a whole. The accounting profession needs to do more to encourage and assist minority involvement and inclusion. Everyone deserves a place at the table and only through diversity can the profession reach its true potential. NABA is an exceptional organization, and this award is more than I deserve.”
Previous winners of the National Achievement in Education Award have included, in 2016, Jenice Prather-Kinsey, CPA, Ph.D., professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
