During a recent visit to Japan, former Nevada State Controller and current IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) Global Board member Kim Wallin, CMA, CPA, took the opportunity to speak with a CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) review class as Waseda University. The university, based in Tokyo, ranks among the top institutions of higher learning in Japan. Thanks to Wallin’s encouragement and inspiring message, many attendees gained a renewed sense of commitment to the CMA program.

Wallin, a former Board Chair, spoke at a review class offered by Waseda’s Graduate School of Accountancy. During her presentation, Wallin discussed the various careers available in accounting and how the CMA opens up new opportunities. She explained why she became a CMA, how the certification has helped to drive her success both as a CPA in public accounting and as State Controller, and the importance of developing good interpersonal and communications skills.

“It was a pleasure to meet with this enthusiastic group of CMA candidates and to witness first-hand their passion for becoming certified,” said Wallin. “I hope that by sharing my own career journey I’ve helped to spur them on to achieve success both on the exam and in their careers.”

The dean of Waseda’s Graduate School of Accountancy is Takashi Shimizu, Ph.D., a long-time, avid supporter of the CMA program and current president of the IMA Tokyo Chapter. Thanks to Dr. Shimizu's support of the program, more than 20 of his students have become CMAs.

Other course instructors at Waseda included Zen-Ichiro Ishibashi, CMA, CFM, CPA, CIA, a senior research fellow of JACFO (Japan Association for CFOs); and Ryota Machida, a doctoral student and research associate, who is also planning to become a CMA. He reported to Wallin that because of her visit, he was “fired up” to take the exam.

During her time in Japan, Wallin also accompanied Jim Gurowka, CAE, IMA senior vice president of global business development, on meetings with other review course providers, including TAC Co., Ltd.

“We appreciate the time Kim took out of her busy schedule to meet with prospective CMAs and to share her inspiring career journey with them,” said Gurowka. “She is an exceptional example of the commitment of our Global Board to our mission and to the goals we have to extend the reach of the CMA program around the world.”
