IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) successfully participated in the 42nd Annual Congress of the European Accounting Association (EAA), held this year in Paphos, Cyprus, on 29-30 May.

The EAA Annual Congress offers a unique opportunity for the Europe-wide community of accounting scholars and researchers to present their latest research findings on accounting and finance-related topics, including management accounting. Each year, between 1,200 to 1,500 delegates attend this popular event and approximately 800-1,000 papers are presented in parallel sessions.

Among the highlights of the Congress, Alain Mulder, director of IMA Europe operations, moderated a well-attended panel on the topic of “Impact of Technology on Management Accountants.” The panel discussed questions such as:
  • What is the impact of technology (robotics, data analytics, AI) on management accounting and control practices (e.g., costing, performance measurement, transfer pricing)?
  • What is the impact of technology on the organization of the management accounting and control departments (e.g., accounting and finance departments)?
  • What theories are useful in studying these developments?
  • What should be the impact of these developments on academic teaching?
  • What potential research avenues lie ahead of us?
