Leadership positions stand out on a résumé, especially when you’re a student seeking to impress first-time employers. A great way to gain leadership experience is to volunteer for an organization you’re passionate about. And as an IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) student member, there’s no better way to do that than to become a Student Ambassador.
Student Ambassadors are the association’s “eyes and ears on campus.” They spread the word to other students about IMA and the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification. They tell others about the benefits of membership and getting certified – and they help connect students with each other to share ideas and best practices.
Darby Brundage, a senior at Culver-Stockton College, is a Student Ambassador who joined the program two years ago. After beginning her college career as a pre-med major, Darby quickly found that she preferred studying accounting and finance. She started taking business courses during the second semester of her freshman year, when she also joined Culver-Stockton’s IMA student chapter. In her sophomore year, Darby served as chapter secretary and later that year was elected president. She just completed her second year as chapter president.
“It’s been a great experience for me,” Darby explains. “I’m very grateful for the opportunities that IMA has given me, and I love to share that enthusiasm with others. I’ve gotten to meet some amazing people and being an IMA member has opened so many doors.”
One of those doors was during a recent interview for an internship position. The interviewer noticed the Student Ambassador role on Darby’s résumé, and she asked her about it. “I was able to explain what the role entailed and why I’m so passionate about IMA. The interviewer was able to see my dedication to IMA and to helping others. It definitely was one of the reasons I was offered that position.”
Being a Student Ambassador requires certain commitments. Each semester, Ambassadors are expected to conduct at least one activity in each of the following categories:

- On campus: Hold a presentation about the CMA, distribute materials at an event, or organize a visit from a Campus Influencer.
- On social media: Post/share IMA social posts on your own platforms, your chapter or your club’s platforms, or your school’s platforms.
- On myIMA Network: Upload a profile picture, start a discussion, or contribute to an existing thread.
