All IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) academic members are invited to celebrate IMA’s 100-Year Anniversary at ACE2019, to be held June 15-19 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina in San Diego. Register by tomorrow, March 29, and receive special Early Bird rates for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Once again this year, the conference will offer an Academic Track integrated into the general program. IMA academic members can support their peers by attending the following sessions:
  • “Data Visualizations: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – How to Create Good Visualizations” – The increased accessibility of data visualization tools (Excel, Power BI, Tableau, and so on) has led to an increase in the use of data visualizations in business. There is often, however, very little training as to what constitutes a “good” visualization. The risk of making suboptimal decisions based on incorrect or misleading visualizations is very real. This session, led by Ann Dzuranin, CPA, Ph.D., dean’s distinguished professor of analytics in accounting at Northern Illinois University, will identify best practices for creating visualizations; identify common decision-making biases; and discuss ways to identify a misleading or incorrect visualization. (Tuesday, June 18, 10:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.)
  • Applied Research Roundtable Session: “Advance Your Management Accounting Knowledge and Skills with Cutting-Edge Research” – Designed specifically for research projects focused on business application or education, this session provides academics with the opportunity to receive feedback on research projects they are pursuing and to serve as a source for new research ideas and resources. Topic areas currently include: CSR Reporting; Balanced Scorecard for Educational Effectiveness; Budgets, Benchmarks, Collaboration; and more. (Tuesday, June 18, 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.)
The conference will also feature opportunities as part of the Solutions Showcase/Research Lab, where on Monday, June 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., conference attendees are invited to participate in surveys conducted by academics.

There will also be two opportunities to attend the Solutions Showcase & Networking Reception on Sunday from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and again on Monday from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Over casual conversation and hors d’oeuvres, academics will have the opportunity to discuss their management accounting research with conference participants and to gather insights for their practice-based research.

Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CFA, CAE, professor-in-residence and IMA vice president of research & policy, said, “This Centennial Conference will offer a perfect opportunity for the exchange of ideas between educators and practitioners. Educators can gain valuable perspectives into real-world challenges while practitioners can learn more about the latest trends in management accounting research. The two Academic Track sessions definitely will provide educators with insight that can strengthen their classroom teaching and research focus.”
