Montvale, N.J., July 13, 2016 – In response to the ongoing talent gap in the accounting profession, IMA®(Institute of Management Accountants), the association of accountants and financial professionals in business, announced today the release of the IMA Management Accounting Competency Framework for public exposure:

The Framework exposure draft is released in tandem with the 30th anniversary of “The Bedford Report – Future Accounting Education: Preparing for the Expanding Profession,” published by the American Accounting Association (AAA) in 1986. That report predicted a “growing gap between what accountants do and what accounting educators teach.” Since that time, IMA has committed itself to aligning the undergraduate accounting curriculum with the skills needed in the profession. This Framework represents the culmination of that work and will serve as a guide for accounting educators and practitioners, especially those who teach or practice management accounting.

“For three decades, IMA has been focused on real world solutions to the growing talent gap that has evolved with the expectations of the CFO growing beyond value preservation to include value creation,” said Jeff Thomson, CMA, CAE IMA president and CEO.  “This framework, and its underlying career enhancing development resources, will help close the talent gap to the benefit of organizations and society.  What is unique about this framework is the ‘ecosystem’ approach that IMA has consistently applied to the talent challenge, whereby academia, employers/corporations and associations have a stake in the game.”

Spanning a vast body of knowledge, the Framework includes the core competencies of the CMA®(Certified Management Accountant) credential, as well as those of the accounting profession overall. By focusing on skills rather than being structured around subject areas, it offers guidance for talent management and career development in the following areas:

  • Planning & Reporting
  • Decision Making
  • Technology
  • Operations
  • Leadership

Academics and practitioners may forward comments and feedback now through August 31, 2016 via
