“Why did you decide to move from a Big 4 to industry?” “I’m working at a tech company. Can l benefit from earning my CMA?” “Is it helpful to get your CMA, your CPA, or both?”

Those were just a few of the questions asked by accounting and finance professionals (and students) during IMA’s recent “Ask Me Anything” event on Reddit. The three-hour Q&A session took place on February 10, with questions coming from those eager to learn more about the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) program and how it can benefit their career.

Responding to the questions in real time was IMA member Michael Kelley, CMA, CPA, who has worked as an accounting and finance professional for more than seven years. Michael began his career at Deloitte, and he’s spent the past two years as a global operations manager at Nike, where much of his work involves data analysis, cost management, and overseeing a global supply chain.

The discussion, which took place on Reddit’s accounting subreddit, https://reddit.com/r/Accounting, included questions on how the CMA benefits those working outside of the manufacturing sector (i.e., financial services, healthcare, high-tech), coping with test-taking anxiety, preferred methods of studying for the exam, the value of dual CMA/CPA certification, and more.

You can view an archived version of the discussion on the Reddit site to see the complete questions and answers.

“Thanks to Michael for his thoughtful, informative responses,” said Dennis Whitney, CMA, IMA senior vice president of certifications, exams, and content integration. “He was able to share some valuable, first-hand insights about the CMA program and how it can support accounting and finance professionals in achieving their career goals. We hope those who participated, and those who access the archived conversation, come away with a better understanding to help them make a decision about certification.”
