The CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) program continues to set records.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, ICMA® (Institute of Certified Management Accountants) welcomed a record-high 11,530 new CMAs, up an impressive 89% compared to last year. For the same time period, new candidates joining the CMA program totaled 49,862, an increase of 26% compared to last year. In addition, the new candidate growth rate in the U.S. continues to gain momentum, climbing almost 12% year-over-year, thanks to IMA’s successful integrated campaign and other initiatives.

To date, more than 75,000 professionals have earned the CMA certification since the program’s inception nearly 50 years ago. That’s compared to approximately 60,000 CMAs at the end of the 2017-2018 fiscal period.

The CMA figures are part of a growing trend among all IMA membership, which by the end of this past fiscal year totaled 139,853, a year-over-year increase of 25% and the highest year-end number in IMA’s history.

The Americas still possess a high concentration of CMAs, with approximately 47% of active CMAs located in this region. At the same time, the geographic reach of the exam continues to expand, particularly in China, which now has more than 15,000 active CMAs. More than 82,000 candidates are currently enrolled in the program.

Dana C. Riess, CMA, CFM, CPA, chair of the ICMA Board of Regents, said, “We have continued to build on the success of the CMA program, and are very pleased to have certified more than 75,000 CMAs since the program began in 1972. As evidenced by the historic number of CMA certificates awarded, we are building the awareness and influence of the CMA program. We continue to pursue efforts to attract new candidates both in the U.S. and in other regions around the world.”
