IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) continues to extend its operations in Japan, with several recent activities that are helping to solidify the association’s presence in the country. Key developments include:
Launch of a New Chapter
IMA launched its second chapter in Japan this fall: the IMA Western Japan Chapter, which currently has approximately 30 founding members and covers a geographic area including the large cities of Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. The new chapter joins IMA’s highly successful Tokyo Chapter in serving the growing number of IMA members and CMAs in Japan.
To celebrate the launch, IMA conducted a charter ceremony, CPE event, and networking reception in late October. The charter ceremony, held at the offices of ICS Partners Co., Ltd., an accounting software company, included a discussion of the new chapter’s strategy, mission, business growth plan, and future event planning. Next came a technical presentation led by Nina Michels-Kim, CMA, CSCA, IMA director of business development, on the “Future of the CFO Team in Business: Leading in the Digital Age,” a discussion of the future trends impacting management accountants. The event concluded with a networking reception at a nearby restaurant.
Sponsorship of APMAA 2018 Conference
IMA served as the exclusive international association sponsor of the Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA) 2018 Conference, held October 29 to November 1 at Waseda University, which hosts the IMA Tokyo Chapter. The conference attracted approximately 250 participants – primarily educators and doctoral students – from more than 20 countries, with 50% from Japan and the other 50% from other countries, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, and China.
More than 100 research papers were presented and discussed at the conference, including a paper by Ryohei Yanagi, CMA, Ph.D., CFO of Eisai Co., Ltd. In addition to his CFO responsibilities, Yanagi is also an educator, one of IMA’s prominent CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) ambassadors, and secretary of the Tokyo Chapter. Michels-Kim also spoke at a conference dinner, discussing “IMA New Products and Services: Helping You Lead in the Digital Age.”
Michels-Kim said, “IMA was pleased to be the exclusive international association sponsor of the APMAA 2018 conference. Through our participation, not only did I have the chance to talk with many management accounting professors from Japan, Asia, and around the world who attended, but it also allowed us to strengthen IMA’s relationship with the APMAA organization. Both APMAA and IMA will explore how we can work together to support Japanese and Asian researchers and students in management accounting by encouraging them to participate in future international conferences and other opportunities.”
Meetings in Tokyo
While in Tokyo, Michels-Kim also visited promising graduate/doctoral students at Waseda University who were taking an advanced management accounting seminar. She also met with Tokyo Chapter board members: Ryota Machida (VP Administration), Zenichiro Ishibashi (Treasurer), Ryo Yanagi (Secretary), and Prof. Takashi Shimizu (President). After the APMAA conference concluded, she also met with IMA’s main partner for CMA exam preparation in Japan, TAC.
