How did you first come across the CMA and what made you decide to go for it?
I first came across the CMA in my Advanced Management Accounting class at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. My professor, Theodore Rogers, discussed the certification and its potential to kick-start your career.
- In what ways do you think the CMA has impacted (or will impact) your professional journey?
Shortly after passing the exam, I was offered a new role at Prince Global Sports as a product development analyst. The CMA provided the practical training I needed to improve our retail pricing structure and forecasting capabilities.
- What is your proudest career moment or milestone as a CMA?
IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) was fantastic in connecting me with employers seeking CMA-certified candidates. With my CMA certification and the help of IMA, I landed an opportunity to interview at Johnson & Johnson. I received an offer and began working as a senior financial analyst at J&J in August 2017.
- What’s the best piece of advice you would give to CMA hopefuls?
First, it’s worth it. Receiving your CMA is widely respected by Fortune 500 companies, and it will provide you with a leg up in the hiring process.
Second, it’s practical. The CMA certification directly relates to real-world strategy and cost accounting problems. Earning the certification will help you accomplish your job more efficiently while allowing you the freedom to further shape your role within the company.
- For those taking the exam, what study tip(s) can you share?
Learn the subject material well enough to explain the general concepts in conversation. Then, dig into the weeds with lots and lots of practice problems.
- If you could have one superpower in the world, what would it be?
The power to heal others. Until then, I plan to use my cost accounting and analytical skills to help Johnson & Johnson more efficiently treat and prevent diseases.
