In honor of Black History Month, IMA’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee is proud to recognize Lorna Winston-Blanks, CPA, CGMA, the first African American woman to serve as president of IMA’s Dallas Fort Worth Area Chapter.
Lorna was recently interviewed for a feature column in the February issue of Strategic Finance magazine by Jimmie Smith, CPA, member of the IMA Global Board of Directors, the IMA Diversity & Inclusion Committee, and the Dallas Fort Worth Area Chapter. The article, titled "Perseverance and Determination," centers on Lorna’s personal and professional commitment to perseverance and determination, and how these two vital characteristics influenced her perspective and helped shape her career.
With a career spanning over 20 years, Lorna has experience in both public accounting and in management accounting as a company controller. She’s played an active role in the Dallas Fort Worth Area Chapter since 2012.
In the article, Lorna also talks about the active pursuit of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Specifically, she offers thoughts on the IMA Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s objective to develop a diverse leadership pipeline for senior volunteer positions.
“I find the ‘inclusion’ part of the committee’s name the most intriguing because it implies action,” says Lorna. “Accounting and finance professionals hold positions of trust, and trust is based on relationships. When the profession has a balanced relationship between its representatives and the constituents it serves, the relationship improves and a higher level of synergy is created.”
