IMA Takes a Leading Role at Academic Events
IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) recently participated in influential gatherings of the academic community, helping to share thought leadership and discuss the many resources IMA has to offer:
AAA Management Accounting Section (MAS) and Beta Alpha Psi
On January 4-6, IMA participated in the AAA Management Accounting Section (MAS) Midyear Meeting in Orlando. At that meeting, Susie Duong, Ph.D, CMA, CPA, CIA, EA, IMA’s senior director of research and thought leadership, spoke at a concurrent session on the topic of the “Impact of AI on Accounting and Finance,” where she discussed the findings of IMA’s recent research report on the topic. IMA was also a sponsor of this meeting, which attracted 325 academics from around the world.
IMA was also the exclusive sponsor of the day-long IMA Doctoral Colloquium, held on January 4. Fifty-six doctoral candidates who are focusing their research efforts on management accounting participated in this event. Duong and IMA Professor-in-Residence and Associate Professor at Baylor University Laurie Burney, Ph.D., CMA, CSCA, presented the attendees with vital information about IMA research and teaching resources. Burney also served on a panel titled, “Roundtable Discussion: Data for Managerial Accounting Research.”

Duong also recently spoke at Beta Alpha Psi’s midyear meeting, which was held in Indianapolis on March 8-9. The theme of the meeting was “Embracing Innovation, Empowering Professionals.”

- Faculty Friday, January 19: Burney, along with Kimberly Swanson Church, Ph.D., director of the school of accountancy at Missouri State University, presented on “Declining Enrollments in Accounting: Challenges and Opportunities.”
- AAA International Accounting Section Conference, January 26, and 24th Annual Accounting Educators’ Seminar, March 1: Burney spoke on “AI’s (ChatGPT’s) Impact on Accounting Education and Research.”
- IMA’s Houston Chapter, February 20: Burney presented on “Embracing the Future: An Introduction to Using AI for Accountants."

Upcoming speaking engagements for Burney and Duong include:
May 18: At the TACTYC (Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges) 2024 Annual Conference in Arlington, Va., Burney will present on “Navigating the Technology Frontier: The Role of AI and Technology in Accounting Classrooms.”
June 8: Burney will speak at a San Antonio Chapter event on the topic of “Changing Landscape of Accounting and Finance: Addressing the Decline in Enrollments with Forward-Thinking Solutions.” The event will be held just prior to IMA’s Americas Accounting & Finance Conference in San Antonio, which runs from June 9-12.
June 11: Duong, along with a co-presenter from Astellas Pharma, will discuss “The Impact of AI on Accounting and Finance” at IMA’s Americas Accounting & Finance Conference in San Antonio.
