Hundreds of educators from across the United States gathered in Houston on January 8-11 for the midyear meeting of the Management Accounting Section (MAS) of the American Accounting Association (AAA). The meeting provided an opportunity for IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) to share information about its resources for students and educators through the participation of senior staff members Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CSCA, CPA, CFA, IMA vice president of research and policy and professor-in-residence; and Kip Krumwiede, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, IMA director of research.
IMA kicked off the meeting by sponsoring a Doctoral Colloquium, a one-day forum for students pursuing doctoral studies. The colloquium featured several small-group breakout sessions and panel discussions, covering topics such as “One Thing I Wish I Knew as a Doctoral Student” and “The Last Mile Problem.” During the colloquium, IMA hosted a luncheon, where Krumwiede discussed the resources that IMA offers to Ph.D. students, including the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) Scholarship Program, Doctoral Grant Program, and Summer Research Program. The next morning, IMA sponsored a breakfast, where Dr. Lawson moderated a panel session titled, “Using IECJ Cases in Your Classroom,” and featuring panelists Margaret Shackell of Ithaca College; Anne Sergeant of Grand Valley State University; and Kip Krumwiede of IMA. Later that day, IMA presented its 2019 Best Case Award to “Troubled Waters: An Outsourced Ethical Dilemma,” developed by Robert Rankin, of Texas A&M University-Commerce; and Trish Driskill, of the University of the Incarnate Word. The team won a $500 cash prize and their case is under consideration for publication in the IMA Educational Case Journal (IECJ®).
“This meeting once again gave IMA the opportunity to inform the academic community about the various programs IMA has available to support their research efforts,” said Dr. Lawson. “It has been encouraging to witness how recognition of IMA has grown over the years and to see how our support of the academic community is yielding such positive results.”
