Fall is a great time for new beginnings and for IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) student and academic members, it’s also a perfect opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of IMA offerings:
Discounted Student Membership
Academic members are reminded about a special student membership promotion, going on now through September 30. Students can join IMA for only $25 (regularly $39). Students should visit www.imanet.org/studentmembership to take advantage of this limited-time opportunity to join.
Plus, as an added incentive, IMA will waive an academic member’s membership fees for the upcoming year if 10 or more of their students register. Request the free membership here after students join.
Academic Dinners
Through a new Academic Dinner program, IMA is giving academics the opportunity to exchange information and learn more about the resources it has to offer in an informal, social setting.
The Academic Dinner program began two years ago. It was started in the Dallas area by longtime IMA volunteer leader Jimmie Smith, CPA (who also was influential in starting the Campus Influencer program, discussed below). The idea behind the dinners was simple: Invite academics to attend a gathering of like-minded peers and practitioners, eat dinner together at a casual restaurant, and network.
Since the program’s inception, IMA has hosted several of these dinners. The next ones are scheduled for this fall: September 24 in Louisville and October 3 in Philadelphia.
According to Tyler Skelton, IMA business development manager, “We like to hold these dinners in areas with a high concentration of colleges, as well as an active local IMA chapter. One or more IMA staff members attends, along with local chapter members, and it’s a great way to let academics know about the resources available to them. So far, we’ve received an excellent response and we plan to continue to hold several dinners each semester.
Dinners for spring 2020 are slated for Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Campus Influencers
Academic members are also reminded about the Campus Influencer program, which aims to connect local practitioners with college campuses. This program has operated successfully since 2016 and to date, more than 14,000 students across the U.S. have heard a presentation from an IMA Campus Influencer.
“The goal of this program is to extend awareness about IMA and the CMA program on campus and so far, we’ve achieved very positive results,” said Lisa Beaudoin, CMA, CSCA, CAE, IMA director of business development. “For academics, it’s a great way to bring an outside practitioner to the classroom so that students can learn about real-world opportunities, including local job prospects and how the CMA designation can help their career. These presentations are also great topics for student clubs or other student group meetings.”
For more information about scheduling a Campus Influencer presentation for your class, academic members should email campusinfluencers@imanet.org.
