Two important deadlines are coming up this month:

CMA Video Contest

January 31 is the last day to submit your video for the CMA Video Contest 2019, which honors IMA’s 100th Anniversary and is asking participants what they think the next 100 years will look like for CMAs. The top prize is $2,500.

Videos should be 30 seconds to two minutes in length and focused on any of the following:
  • Showing a “day in the life” of a CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) in the next century.
  • Describing what future jobs CMAs will hold.
  • Addressing what challenges CMAs will need to overcome and how the CMA certification will help them succeed.
  • Making predictions about what challenges CMAs will face in the next 100 years.
Videos can be shot using an iPhone, Android, GoPro, DSLR, or video camera and can take a variety of approaches. Videos can be funny, artsy, or true-to-life: Participants can create a music video, stage a job interview or business meeting, or anchor a news segment, for example. Everyone is encouraged to unleash their creativity, think outside the box, and have fun!

IMA’s panel of independent judges will review all videos and select up to three finalists per the judging criteria and up to 10 honorable mentions. Finalist videos will be posted on Facebook for voting on Friday, February 15, 2019. The winning video will be announced on Friday, March 1, 2019, on IMA’s Facebook page.

Carl Menconi Ethics Case Writing Competition

Practitioners and academics can bring real-world ethical dilemmas to life for students by participating in the 2019 Carl Menconi Ethics Case Writing Competition, accepting entries through January 26, 2019. Full submission guidelines are available here.

The competition, sponsored jointly by IMA’s Committee on Ethics and IMA’s Professor-in-Residence, Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CSCA, CPA, CFA, works to develop and distribute teaching cases focused on business ethics. It’s open to accounting and finance academics as well as practitioners, and joint submissions are encouraged.

Winners of the competition will be featured in IMA’s flagship publication, Strategic Finance, and the case author or team will be recognized at IMA’s 2019 Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego in June. Winners also will receive one free Conference registration and a $500 cash prize.

The winning case in last year’s competition, “To Break Ships or Not to Break Ships,” was authored by Paul Goodchild, CPA, and Ryan Peterson, CMA, both assistant professors of accountancy at the University of Central Missouri. Their case was featured in the July 2018 issue of Strategic Finance, and both authors were recognized at IMA’s Annual Conference & Expo in Indianapolis last June.

All submissions to the Carl Menconi Ethics Case Writing Competition must focus on business ethics, with a specific application to management accounting and finance issues, and reference IMA’s Statement of Ethical Professional Practice. For questions or additional information, please contact Lawson at research@imanet.org.
