IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) sponsors or cosponsors a variety of grant and award programs for academics in the field of accounting. All eligible IMA academic members are encouraged to apply for the following:
Carl Menconi Ethics Case Competition: This annual program is named in memory of Mr. Carl Menconi who held leadership positions within IMA for many years and also served as chair of IMA’s Committee on Ethics. He also valued education and taught part-time at his alma mater, Northern Illinois University. The overall goal of this program is to develop and distribute teaching cases focused on business ethics with specific application to management accounting and finance issues. The winning case will be featured in Strategic Finance magazine, and the case author or team will be recognized the IMA Annual Conference & Expo in Indianapolis in June 2018, as well as receive a cash prize. Submissions are due by January 26, 2018.
Emerging Scholar Manuscript Award: This award was created by the IMA Research Foundation to recognize the accomplishments of the newest members of the management accounting academic community. The award, now in its seventh year, acknowledges the exceptional manuscript contribution of a single emerging scholar/young professional of management accounting who has a received a terminal degree (Ph.D., DBA, Ed.D., JD) within the last seven years. IMA is accepting entries for the 2018 award now through January 31, 2018.
Management Accounting Section Dissertation Award: Sponsored through the Dissertation Award Committee of the Management Accounting Section (MAS) of the American Accounting Association (AAA), this award recognizes an outstanding doctoral dissertation in the area of cost or management accounting. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2018.
Faculty Leadership Award: This award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated (at the national, regional, and/or local level) exemplary leadership within and service to IMA. This includes supporting students participating in IMA, promoting IMA credentialing programs, writing for IMA publications, participating in IMA research, and educational activities. Nominations must be received by March 1, 2018.
Ursel K. Albers IMA Campus Advocate Award: This award was established to provide an opportunity for IMA to recognize an IMA student chapter advisor who has made significant contributions to IMA overall and to IMA student members in particular. Nominations are due by March 1, 2018.
R. Lee Brummet Award: Named for Lee Brummet, a former IMA president, this award honors academicians who promote achievements of management accounting and financial management through teaching, research, and service. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2018.
Jim Bulloch Award for Innovation in Management Accounting Education: This award, which is administered by the Management Accounting Section (MAS) of the American Accounting Association (AAA), honors academicians for their outstanding contribution to the field of management accounting education. The award is conferred on a broad range of criteria: for innovations in teaching methods, class materials that promote critical thinking, cases or exercises that enhance communication skills, or any contribution that enhances cost or management accounting education. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2018.
IMA Summer Case Writing Competition: IMA educators are encouraged to submit entries for a case writing competition in the area of management accounting or related fields. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2018.
Research Grant Program: The IMA Research Foundation funds timely research on accounting and financial management subjects that can be applied to current and emerging business issues. Visit IMA's website for the most up-to-date information about the program's objectives and proposal guidelines. Applications are considered on an ongoing basis.
IMA Short Cases: Submit short cases in any area of management accounting. Those reflecting “real-world” situations are strongly preferred. Download the call for submissions criteria and guidelines here. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2018.
