Got plans this summer? All IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) educator members are invited to join colleagues, practitioners, and industry leaders at this year’s IMA Annual Conference & Expo, to be held on June 17-21 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel in Denver, Colo. This year’s Conference, themed “Elevate Your Perspective,” will provide numerous opportunities for educator members to interact with peers and practitioners. Register here by March 31 and receive special Early Bird rates, up to $375 in savings.

Once again this year, the Conference will offer an Applied Research Track integrated into the general program. IMA educator members can support their peers by attending the following sessions:

  • “Advance Your Management Accounting Knowledge and Skills with Cutting-Edge Research” – This roundtable session is a forum where professionals can learn about research projects currently being pursued by management accounting researchers, obtain new practice insights, and have the opportunity to share their professional experiences in relation to the projects presented. Session participants will have the opportunity to discuss researchers’ findings in small groups with the researchers on topics of personal interest. (Tuesday, June 20, 10:45 a.m. to 12 noon)

  • “What’s New in Management Accounting?” (by Kenneth Merchant, Ph.D., University of Southern California) – The field of management accounting is vibrant, and many companies are developing and using innovate new techniques. Academic research is pushing the boundaries of understanding, and approaches for teaching both college students and executives is evolving. Attendees to this session will be provided with an overview of these developments from an experienced accounting professor. (Tuesday, June 20, 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.)

Dr. Merchant will also be available on Tuesday, June 20 from 10 to 10:45 am at the Membership Mingle to talk about his new textbook co-authored with Dr. C.J. McNair-Connolly titled, “Management Accounting – An Integrated Approach.”

  • “Ethics Case Session” (by Paul Juras, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, Babson College) – The winning case from this year’s Carl Menconi Ethics Case Competition will be presented and discussed, along with how practitioners can partner with academics to develop teaching cases on issues (ethical or other) that they have faced. The overall goal of this session is to encourage the use and development of teaching cases focused on business ethics with specific application to management accounting and finance issues. (Tuesday, June 20, 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m.)

The Conference will also feature two opportunities to participate in the Solutions Showcase and Networking Reception, which will be held on Sunday, June 18, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and again on Monday, June 19, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Over casual conversation and hors d’oeuvres, presenters will informally discuss their management accounting research and have the opportunity to interact with conference participants.

Said Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CFA, IMA vice president of research and policy, “IMA’s Annual Conference & Expo offers a unique opportunity for educators and practitioners to exchange ideas. Practitioners get to learn more about the latest developments in management-accounting research, while educators gain valuable perspectives into real-world challenges. The session in our Applied Research Track, in particular, can provide educators with inspiration and insight that can strengthen their classroom teaching and research focus.”
