Tokyo, Japan, March 15, 2017 –IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) is pleased to announce the signing of a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the prestigious Graduate School of Accountancy (GSA) at Waseda University to promote further best practices in management accounting education and IMA’s Certified Management Accountant (CMA®) credential in the country.
Waseda University, founded in 1882, is recognized as one of the top private universities in Japan. The purpose of the MOU is to hold joint events for Waseda’s students, alumni and IMA members and promote the intersection of practical insights and rigorous scientific knowledge in business education.
Nina Michels-Kim, CMA, IMA Director of Europe, who is of Japanese descent, has been in discussions with Professor Takashi Shimizu, Tokyo Chapter President and Dean of GSA, and a member of the chapter; Dr. Ryohei Yanagi, CMA, CFO of Eizai Pharmaceuticals and an adjunct lecturer of GSA, to explore collaboration opportunities between IMA and Waseda University. The discussions started when Nina Michels-Kim visited the Waseda campus to present the Tokyo chapter with the ICMA Board of Regents Third place award among small chapters on behalf of IMA in the summer of 2015. The award was determined using the following criteria: active CMAs in the chapter, exam parts taken, exam parts passed, new CMAs, and new candidates.
“It has been a dream of mine to further IMA in the country that I was born and raised. The MOU with Waseda University gives our members the possibility to expand their network at joint events and deepen their knowledge in business education,” said Michels-Kim.
"Signing the MOU with IMA is the first step to strengthen our partnership and add value to our students by providing them with the opportunity to earn the prestigious CMA credential,” said Professor Shimizu.
The MOU will be the impetus for increased collaboration between IMA and Waseda, including a Continued Professional Education event jointly hosted by the IMA Tokyo chapter and GSA on April 22. Please click here for more information about the event.
