IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) invites student members and chapters to participate in the following competitive award and scholarship programs, many of which have approaching deadlines:
For Individual Students:
MEF and SCMS Scholarships – IMA student members who have not previously received awards under these programs can apply for these scholarships, which bestow awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. These include the IMA Memorial Education Fund (MEF) Scholarship and the Stuart Cameron & Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship (SCMS), which carry deadlines of March 10, 2018.
Student Manuscript Competition – This program provides any student member with the opportunity to share his or her IMA student membership experience via an 800-word essay published in Strategic Finance. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2018, for this year’s competition. Follow these links to see the complete rules and an application and to view the 2017 winning entry.
CMA Scholarship Program – Students must be nominated by faculty members to receive this scholarship, which allows the student to take the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) exam at no cost. For more information and a nomination form, please click here. The deadline for nominations is June 1, 2018.
CMA Doctoral Scholarship Program – This scholarship program was created to encourage doctoral students in management accounting or financial management to pursue their CMA certification. Recipients of this scholarship receive a package of benefits, enabling them take the CMA exam at no cost. Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral accounting program concentrating in management accounting or financial management. Visit CMA Doctoral Scholarship Program to learn more. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Doctoral Student Grant Program – IMA's Research Foundation sponsors a research grant program for doctoral students in management accounting and financial management. This program is designed to assist accounting doctoral students who are pursuing research that has the potential to contribute to the management accounting profession. Research conducted in connection with a dissertation or other project is eligible for funding. Students can visit IMA’s website to learn more. For further information and submission guidelines, please click here. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Doctoral Summer Research Program – This scholarship, sponsored by the IMA Research Foundation, awards a $5,000 stipend to help alleviate the need for doctoral students to teach during the summer and enables them to instead focus on research. For more information and application guidelines, please click here. The deadline for this scholarship is April 15, 2018.
For Student Chapters:
Award of Excellence and Outstanding Student Chapter Competition – Student chapters compete for a gold, silver, or bronze award of excellence by promoting IMA's mission and vision and by providing a variety of activities and services to their student members. The top four schools will be honored at IMA's Annual Conference & Expo in Indianapolis next June. Awards are also given for best strategic plan and best website. Please click on Student Chapter Award of Excellence for more information, rules, and an application. The first submission for this award was due by October 31, 2017, and the second submission is due by March 31, 2018.
IMA Student Case Competition –Teams of students respond to a case (published in the August 2017 issue of Strategic Finance, titled “BabyFreedom: Stakeholders, Strategy, and Qualitative Analysis,” and available here) by preparing and submitting a videotaped presentation, which is then judged by select IMA members. This exciting competition presents students with real-life challenges and the opportunity to analyze a case, develop a solution, present it to an audience, and receive recognition for their efforts. The top four teams receive $3,000 and are eligible to participate in a live competition at IMA's Annual Conference & Expo in Indianapolis next June; the winning team receives an additional $2,000. Clark Johnson Achievement Award – This award, presented at IMA's Annual Conference & Expo in June, acknowledges a student chapter whose efforts best reflect outstanding leadership through innovation, organizational development, and interdependent partnerships.
