Inside IMA

From Montvale to Singapore, COSO Workshops Were a Hit

Evolving technologies, globalization, and changing business models have increased the need for greater focus on the challenges of designing and implementing effective internal controls. In an effort to address this developing need, IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) hosted a COSO Internal Control Certificate workshop in Montvale, N.J., from June 5-7, offering professionals an in-person training opportunity to sharpen their internal control management skills. The workshop attracted financial professionals from businesses of varying sizes and across diverse industries.

During the workshop, Jeff Thomson, CMA, CAE, IMA president and CEO; former IMA chair: Sandra Richtermeyer, Ph.D., CMA, CPA; dean of the Manning School of Business at University of Massachusetts Lowell; and COSO board member; and Paul Walker, Ph.D., CPA, Schiro/Zurich chair in Enterprise Risk Management at St. John's University, shared their knowledge and professional experiences in the COSO Internal Control—Integrated Framework using real-world scenarios. After successful completion of the course and online final exam, participants will earn a total of 25.5 NASBA CPE credits and a COSO Certificate of Educational Achievement.

To advocate for the COSO Frameworks as the international standard for effective internal control and risk management practices across Asia, this past spring, IMA collaborated with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Singapore and Protiviti Singapore to found a joint program – COSO Academy Asia. From April 10-12, IMA hosted a COSO Internal Control Certificate workshop in Singapore with the COSO Academy Asia partners. Expert instructors include Thomson and Professor Foo See Liang, Ph.D., Singapore Management University.

IMA anticipates offering another live workshop in the U.S. in the fall of 2017. For those who prefer a self-study option, this COSO Internal Control – Integrated Framework product offers the same topics presented in the COSO workshops, in a convenient online course. Successful course and exam completion earns 17 CPE credits and the COSO Certificate of Educational Achievement.
