Build the Future of the Profession through IMA's Campus Influencers Program

Since its launch in January 2016, IMA’s Campus Influencers program has tripled the number of its volunteers to 120 people, increasing the momentum of a grassroots effort to tell students about the benefits of IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification, and career paths in management accounting.

IMA has experienced record growth in its student network, which now covers 15,000 members and 150 chapters. The numbers are double what they were a few years ago. In response to these developments, IMA created the Campus Influencers program to allow professional members to share their career insights with students.

Originated by Jimmie Smith, CPA, former chair and current member of the IMA Member Relations Committee, the program operates on a “turnkey” approach: Volunteers reach out to local universities using step-by-step instructions provided by IMA and deliver detailed, scripted PowerPoint presentations to accounting and finance students.

Through the program, students receive valuable career information, while volunteers gain the rewarding experience of helping those who are about to embark on their first career. Many Campus Influencers choose to form enduring relationships with students and professors.

The success of the program is in large part due to the commitment of enthusiastic volunteers. Eight of these volunteer ‘superstars’ are profiled in the March issue of Strategic Finance magazine. Read more about them here: http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/march-2017-campus-influencer-superstars/.

“If you are enthusiastic, active in your local chapter, or simply willing to give your time, this volunteer experience is for you,” says Thomson. Interested volunteers should email campusinfluencers@imanet.org to learn more about getting involved with IMA’s growing campus-outreach initiative.
