“Faculty Friday” Webinar Series

IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) continues its popular “Faculty Friday” webinar series this fall with two offerings that discuss how to use media to engage students. This webinar series aims to share innovative teaching techniques and programs through hour-long presentations available exclusively to IMA educator members.

The next webinar, “Snapchat 101: Engaging Students in Accounting,” will be held on September 29 and will feature Wendy Tietz, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, accounting professor at Kent State University, who will discuss how to use the popular app Snapchat. Tietz will provide an overview of Snapchat basics and will demonstrate ways that Snapchat can be used for student engagement, including examples of instructor-student Snaps. Tietz will also explain how increased student engagement through this social media channel can lead to lower drop rates and higher course evaluations. Register by visiting here.

On October 20, Kelly Richmond Pope, Ph.D., CPA, accounting professor at DePaul University, will speak on the topic of “Teaching Millennials With Reality TV: The Use of Multimedia Learning in Managerial Accounting,” Pope, a white-collar crime expert as well as a filmmaker, will share her own experience of using television programs such as “Shark Tank” to spark interest and engagement among her students. Describing her presentation, Pope said, “I firmly believe in the power of using consumer media to increase student engagement, particularly among the millennial generation. By using the media that students use – such as reality television, for example – we can get students more actively involved and engaged in the topics of managerial accounting, which can sometimes seem dry and too abstract. I hope that by participating to these Faculty Friday webinars, educators can come away with useful tools that they can take directly into their classroom.”

We’re very pleased to offer these innovative presentations and provide a forum for faculty members to exchange best practices for classroom teaching. This series demonstrates how committed our educator members are to sharing their knowledge and to working together to both support each other and our profession’s next generation of leaders.”

Both the September 29 and October 20 webinars will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT and preregistration is required.
