2017 Year in Review

Inspired people brought together for a worthwhile mission can do great things. This certainly was the case during IMA’s Fiscal Year 2017. IMA hit some significant milestones:

  • Record-breaking growth in CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) candidates (reaching a high of 41,000)
  • Growing IMA membership rolls with 90,000+ members and 11% annual growth
  • Doubling of the number of CMA scholarships and a 30% increase in student members

Significantly, it was also the year we launched our unprecedented, first-ever integrated marketing campaign (which won the 2017 Big Apple Award for Integrated Communications).  A “You’ve Got To Earn It” tattoo was featured on the back of a newly minted CMA to convey the lasting mark the certification can have on a professional career.

But the relevance of the campaign extended beyond CMAs to IMA employees and IMA members. IMA employees “earn it” through responsiveness to member needs and commitment to service. IMA members “earn it” through continuous learning and application of the highest standards of ethics and integrity in their professional roles. These core values form the basis of the IMA community, which as our financial results demonstrate, is stronger than ever.

With that strength, IMA can offer unique and innovative products and partnerships to advance the profession.  We launched the CSCA® (Certified in Strategy and Competitive Analysis), a specialty credential for existing CMA certificate holders. Additionally, we offered numerous continuing education opportunities to members, through our Annual Conference & Expo, IMA webinars, and local/regional chapter and council educational seminars. Our commitment to fostering lifelong learning opportunities was evidenced throughout the year with new online courses and live workshops, including ethics and COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission).

IMA also published its first-ever management accounting textbook.  It effectively integrates all major management accounting concepts into one unified body of knowledge.  Utilizing this integrated framework moves management accounting education away from what is currently just a random combination of tools and techniques, to a decision-oriented framework that incorporates the best of the modern control literature.

Partnering with organizations interested in advancing the profession is another important way we serve the IMA community. We teamed up with global staffing firm, Robert Half International, to share the latest insights and career resources for skilling upwards and career planning. We published research with ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) on how accountants and finance professionals gauge economic sentiment across the globe.

IMA is an advocate for offering more leadership opportunities to diverse stakeholders. In concert with the NABA (National Association of Black Accountants), we are developing resources for supporting diversity and inclusion within the accounting profession. We also host a Women’s Accounting Leadership Series where women in the profession can network and discuss challenges they face in the workplace.

Finally, we team to achieve with thought leaders in the accounting and finance space. This includes membership in COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organizations), IFAC (International Federation of Accountants), and IIRC (International Integrated Reporting Council). Through these partnerships, we are able to broaden the influence of IMA and to participate in discussions affecting the global landscape of management accounting.

Of course we never forget the pipeline of talent in development at universities. Ensuring students receive the technical training and skills they need to enter and succeed in the workplace is top of mind. The turnout for our 2017 Student Leadership Conference was impressive and student engagement levels were high.

These are just a few of the highlights of what has proven to be a highly creative and productive period at IMA. It was an AWESOME year!!!
