Comcast Limits Monthly Downloads
September 2, Montvale, N.J.
omcast, one of the two largest U.S. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), announced last week that it will begin limiting downloads for its home broadband customers on October 1. The limit will be 250GB per month, and Comcast spokesperson Jennifer Khoury told Brian Stelter of
The New York Times that the cap is about 100 times what an average user will consume in bandwidth each month. Despite the large size of the cap, Stelter quotes several strong reactions to the decision, including DSLReports.com, which calls it “a significant shift in the U.S. broadband market that won’t be reversible,” and Om Malik of the GigaOm website, who warns that the cap is “the end of the Internet as we know it.”
