Strategic Risk Management at the LEGO Group

The LEGO Group has developed strategic risk management in four steps. Traditional ERM (enterprise risk management) was supplemented by explicit handling of strategic risks, and Monte Carlo simulations were added to understand volatility. Active risk and opportunity planning (AROP) became part of preparing the business case for projects, and scenario testing of plausible futures completed the overall plan.

Three reasons make financial uncertainty likely in 2012. Regulatory changes such as the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in America and the reintroduction of the Companies Bill in India will create regulatory confusion. Political and fiscal instability in both the United States and the European Union will produce global volatility, as will the currency fluctuations and inflationary pressures in emerging economies.
