Financial Officers as Leaders: Lessons from Army Medicine
By Timothy D. West, CPA, and COL Marcus W. Cronk
When the military reemphasized the importance of controlling its healthcare costs a few years ago, it turned to the men and women in the system’s financial trenches, including many of its brightest management accountants. The solutions they came up with have redefined the way physicians and clinics are incentivized and have reenergized the way they deliver patient care. Here’s how it was done.
The Amazing Accounting Race
By Amy Ford, CPA
In order to close the gap between working through exercises in a textbook and solving real problems in a business, the author developed a classroom game that brings life to the process and encourages students to think about a career in accounting. Called the Amazing Accounting Race, the game is an exercise in developing budgets. Each team has to create a master budget, and they do this by putting together individual pieces after solving a set of clues. Only calculators and scratch paper are allowed, and roadblocks are part of the game.
Achieving Innovative Corporate Performance Management
By Bob Paladino, CPA
In this last installment of a three-part analysis of innovative CPM, the author considers the final two principles. As in the previous articles, Sharp HealthCare of San Diego is the corporation studied. Principle 4 focuses on improving performance. Assessments of key customer groups, competitors, customer feedback, and industry trends define the basis for improving patient satisfaction, quality care, and the prioritization process. Principle 5 concludes with an evaluation of how Sharp manages and leverages the knowledge base it has created.
