Montvale, N.J., July 17, 2013 –IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), the association of accountants and financial professionals in business, has named Dennis R. Beresford, CMA®, CFM, CPA, of Athens, Ga. and Gary M. Cokins, CPIM, of Cary, N.C., as recipients of its Distinguished Member Award.
The purpose of the award, bestowed for the first time this year, is to recognize an IMA member “whose successes, exceptional achievements, dedication, and professionalism bring honor to the organization, the profession, and themselves consistent with IMA’s mission and core values.”
Mr. Beresford has enjoyed a long and prominent career of service to the accounting profession and to IMA. Currently, he serves as the Ernst & Young Executive Professor of Accounting at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. Previously, he served for 10 years as the chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and prior to that, as the national director of accounting standards for Ernst & Young.
Among his numerous honors, Mr. Beresford was named by the Journal of Accountancy in 2012 as one of the “125 People of Impact in Accounting.” An IMA member for more than 50 years, Beresford’s dedication to IMA includes service as an IMA chapter president, national director, national vice president, and program chair for two annual conferences. Since 1997, he has been an active member of IMA’s Financial Reporting Committee.
Mr. Cokins’ career spans 40 years as an internationally recognized expert, speaker, and author in performance improvement systems and advanced cost management. He began his career as a strategic planner with FMC Corporation, where he later served as the company’s financial controller. In 1996, he joined ABC Technologies, which was acquired by SAS in 2002, a provider of enterprise performance management and business analytics software, in 2002. At SAS, he was a principal consultant and retired in 2012.
Cokins worked alongside Dr. David Norton with initial research that led to the development of the balanced scorecard. Cokins is the lead author of numerous well-respected monographs, including “An ABC Manager’s Primer,” sponsored by IMA, as well as “Activity-Based Cost Management: Making it Work,” judged by the Harvard Business School Press as a book “that should be read first,” and “Activity-Based Cost Management: An Executive’s Guide.” Cokins holds a B.S. degree from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Currently, he serves as a member of the IMA Research Foundation.
Brian L. McGuire, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CBM, CITP, chair (2012-2013) of IMA’s Volunteer Leadership Committee said, “With this award, IMA is pleased to acknowledge the accomplishments and exceptional contributions that Denny and Gary have made to the profession and to IMA over many years. Both of them have been instrumental in helping to advance the management accounting profession and have risen to become giants in the field, recognized around the world for their leadership, innovation, and service. It is an honor to consider Denny and Gary among the ranks of IMA members, and we look forward to their continued contributions in the years ahead.”
This year’s winners were announced at IMA’s 94th Annual Conference & Exposition, held in New Orleans, La., in June. Both awardees were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of senior IMA volunteer leaders.
