Letter from the 2011–2012 Chair-Elect
As someone who has had a rewarding experience with IMA for many years—in fact, I sat for and passed the very first CMA exam in 1972—I have a long-term perspective on the vital role IMA plays for our members and the profession. The purpose of my letter is not to talk about IMA’s past, however, but to look ahead to our bright future. We are more committed than ever to our global vision: to be the leading resource for developing, certifying, connecting, and supporting the world’s best accountants and financial professionals in business.
IMA’s 2013–2016 Strategic Plan is sharply focused on meeting the emerging needs of our members in a dynamic profession. Today and in the future, management accountants must cultivate international business skills to help their companies succeed in a global marketplace. They must be able to help their employers assess business combinations; organize and analyze complex data across multiple corporate systems; build leadership potential; and be able to integrate reporting of financial information with environmental, social, and governance data. And our members also must have certified and transferable skills to enhance their personal and professional value to current or potential employers.
IMA’s Innovation Journey
We at IMA believe that innovation is the key to ensuring that we can help our members and the profession to meet these emerging needs. For this reason, we have launched what we call IMA’s Innovation Journey—a formal process to collect, evaluate, and develop ideas that can form the basis for new products, services, solutions, and benefits. This process is designed to create a road map and dedicated funding for prototyping, research, market testing, and eventual rollout of validated products. Led by an Innovation Council to ensure the highest level of support, the Innovation Journey is a very important part of our long-range planning.
As we continue to invest in IMA’s innovation, value, and growth, I encourage all of our members to invest in IMA as well. That is, invest your time and energy in engaging fully with IMA. Build your professional credentials by earning a CMA. Avail yourself of our unparalleled educational programs. Become actively involved in our chapters and communities to hone your leadership skills. From students to working management accountants, IMA is the association you can rely on to enrich your professional life, and I urge you to take full advantage of the value we provide.
